Pitbulls - Breeders - Breed History
Pit Bulls, now classified as different
breeds, were referred at one time to as Bull and Terriers or Bull Terriers.
The ancestors of the breed are Terriers, untiring workers which are very quick and eager to please the owner. These dogs were ideal to cross with the Old English Bulldog to produce an excellent fighter.
Thus, Pit Bulls belong to the Molosser and Terrier family. Some Pit Bulls have more in common with the Old Bulldog, than do the modern Bulldogs.
Banning of bull baiting in 1835, has led to increasing popularity of dog fighting. So, the original aim of Pit Bulls was dog fighting; they would fight anything put in the pit with them. The first Pit Bulls lacked agility and various crosses were tried
in effort to create the necessary features. The breeding was promiscuous, and early Pit Bulls were of all sorts and shapes. In the end of the 19th century, the breed standard was developed.
This breed often got a bad reputation and several countries banned them, not much because of the incidents and actual aggressiveness of the breed, but because of the breeds fighting history. If a Pit Bull becomes hyper-aggressive, it is the owner who should be blamed, because aggressiveness has been bred out of these dogs and is likely a result of improper training. Pit Bulls are very friendly and people-oriented; they are tolerant to children and make excellent pets and guardians.
